Masking is a great way to create a simple background.

Die cut a circle (or shape of choice) out of a piece of card. Tape down on to a piece card. Colour the background with a dye based ink. Then lay the stencil over the top and apply ink through the stencil. (or you can use texture paste)

Use up those patterned paper scraps
